Individual Variability of Hearing-Impaired Consonant Perception
نویسنده
چکیده
The study of hearing impaired speech recognition at the consonant level allows for a detailed examination of individual variability. Use of low-context stimuli, such as consonants, aids in minimizing the influence of some variable cognitive abilities (e.g., use of context, memory) across listeners and focuses on differences in the processing or interpretation of the existing acoustic consonant cues. We show that hearing-impaired perception can vary across multiple tokens of the same consonant, in both noise robustness and confusion groups. Withinconsonant differences in noise robustness are related to differences in intensity of the consonant cue region. For a single listener, high errors can exist for a small subset of test stimuli, and performance for the majority of test stimuli can remain at ceiling. The existence of withinconsonant differences in confusion groups entails that an average over multiple tokens of the same consonant results in a larger confusion group than for a single consonant token. For each consonant token, the same confusion group is consistently observed across a population of hearing impaired listeners. Quantifying perceptual differences provides insight into the perception of speech under noisy conditions and characterizes each listener’s hearing impairment.

Systematic Groupings in Hearing Impaired Consonant Perception
Auditory training programs are currently being explored as a method of improving hearing impaired (HI) speech perception; precise knowledge of a patient’s individual differences in speech perception allows one to more accurately diagnose how a training program should be implemented. Remapping or variations in the weighting of acoustic cues, due to auditory plasticity, can be examined with the d...
متن کاملA Relationship of Tone, Consonant, and Speech Perception in Audiological Diagnosis
This study was designed to examine the phoneme recognition errors of hearing-impaired (HI) listeners on a consonant-by-consonant basis, to show (1) how each HI ear perceives individual consonants differently and (2) how standard clinical measurements (i.e., using a tone and word) fail to predict these differences. Sixteen English consonant-vowel (CV) syllables of six signal-to-noise ratios in s...
متن کاملCorrelation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملPersian Cued Speech: The Effect on the Perception of Persian Language Phonemes and Monosyllabic Words with and without Sound in Hearing Impaired Children
Objectives: This paper studies the effect of Persian Cued Speech on the perception of Persian language phonemes and monosyllabic words with and without sound in hearing impaired children. Cued Speech is a sound based mode of communication for hearing impaired people that is comprised of a limited series of hand complements and the normal pattern of speech. And it is shown that it effectively ca...
متن کاملAided and Unaided Speech Perception by Older Hearing Impaired Listeners
The most common complaint of older hearing impaired (OHI) listeners is difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise. However, tests of consonant-identification and sentence reception threshold (SeRT) provide different perspectives on the magnitude of impairment. Here we quantified speech perception difficulties in 24 OHI listeners in unaided and aided conditions by analyzing (1) con...
